About XML Sitemaps
An XML sitemap is a file that lists all important pages on your website, helping search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo discover and index your content more efficiently. Sitemaps are especially valuable for large sites, new sites, or sites with complex navigation.
Sitemap Structure
A standard XML sitemap follows the Sitemaps Protocol 0.9 format:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
<url>
<loc>https://example.com/page</loc>
<lastmod>2024-01-15</lastmod>
<changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
<priority>0.8</priority>
</url>
</urlset> Sitemap Elements
- loc (required): The full URL of the page
- lastmod (optional): Date the page was last modified (YYYY-MM-DD format)
- changefreq (optional): How frequently the page changes (always, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, never)
- priority (optional): Relative importance of the page (0.0 to 1.0, default 0.5)
Best Practices
- Keep sitemaps under 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed
- Use sitemap index files for larger sites
- Include only canonical URLs
- Update your sitemap when content changes
- Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
- Reference your sitemap in robots.txt
