About Keyword Density
Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. It's a fundamental concept in SEO that helps search engines understand what your content is about.
How Keyword Density is Calculated
The formula is simple: (Number of times keyword appears / Total word count) x 100
For example, if your keyword appears 5 times in a 500-word article, the keyword density would be 1% (5/500 x 100 = 1%).
Optimal Keyword Density
While there's no magic number, most SEO experts recommend:
- 1-2% - Generally considered optimal for primary keywords
- Under 1% - May indicate the keyword is underused
- Over 3% - May be flagged as keyword stuffing
Best Practices
- Write naturally: Focus on quality content first, then optimize
- Use variations: Include synonyms and related terms
- Check competitors: Analyze top-ranking pages for your keywords
- Consider user intent: Match your content to what users are searching for
- Use long-tail keywords: Multi-word phrases often have less competition
Beyond Single Keywords
Modern SEO considers more than just single-word density. Search engines analyze:
- N-grams (2-word, 3-word phrases)
- Semantic relationships between words
- Topic relevance and coverage
- Content structure and organization
